Now that the barrier to entry for starting your own affiliate network is so low, is that a good thing or a bad thing?

A good question to ponder…with answers that argue both sides.

For example – here are a few benefits:

-          Brokering campaigns without a system is a nightmare.  Finally you can focus on marketing an offer and analyzing the numbers instead of running a million reports.

-          Competition breeds innovation.  As the needs of users increase so the new features available to improve systems and processes.

On the other hand – here are a few disadvantages:

-          Running an affiliate network is not easy.  Anyone who thinks they are someone thinks they can do it well.  Once they get started, it’s easy to get frustrated.

-          Competition – how do you stand out from the crowd?  What makes your program unique? How do you keep publishers from whittling your margin away?

Have more benefits and disadvantages to add to the list?  What are they? Does one perspective outweigh the other?  What do you think?
